Here are five things to know about Dr. Goldschmidt.

1. He has served as dean for 10 years.

2. He is credited with vaulting the medical school to national prominence and helped create and grow the university’s healthcare delivery system, UHealth, according to the report. That growth included the December 2007 purchase of a 560-bed hospital across the street from the university’s longtime partner, Miami-based Jackson Memorial Hospital, where the medical school’s residents train.

3. Healthcare has also become UM’s most profitable endeavor under Dr. Goldschmidt’s tenure, according to the report, which cites audited financial statements. However, the report notes, the expansion of UHealth also financially strained the medical school, which led to the layoffs of about 900 full-time and part-time workers in May 2012.

4. Now that Dr. Goldschmidt is leaving his position, he will take a sabbatical to explore opportunities for the Miller School and UHealth in other countries and to serve as an adviser to the university, according to the Miami Herald, which cites an announcement from the university.

5. Laurence B. Gardner, MD, UM’s executive dean for education and policy, will serve as interim leader of the medical school while a committee yet to be appointed will launch an international search for Dr. Goldschmidt’s replacement.
