UNC Health taps commercialization leader

Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health has named Dedric Carter, PhD, vice president for commercialization and translational advancement, effective Dec. 8.

Dr. Carter currently serves as vice chancellor for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development and as chief innovation officer at UNC-Chapel Hill, according to a Nov. 20 health system news release.

In his new systemwide role, he will develop commercialization strategies across the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health, forge partnerships among researchers, clinicians and industry and advise inventors and entrepreneurs.

Dr. Carter has led UNC-Chapel Hill’s innovation ecosystem since 2023, delivering record growth across key metrics. Under his leadership, invention disclosures increased 21%, provisional patent applications rose 29%, issued U.S. patents grew 30%, and IP-based startups launched increased 33%.
