Dr. Crausman comes on board as the 214-bed hospital negotiates a merger with Caritas Christi Health Care, a network of six Catholic hospitals.

After announcing that it was on the verge of insolvency in 2008, the hospital has been operating under a kind of court supervision similar to receivership.

Dr. Crausman most recently served as director of the Center for Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at the state Department of Health and chief administrative officer of the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline.
