Mr. Polanowicz will replace JudyAnn Bigby, MD, who is leaving the governor’s administration with three other cabinet members. Dr. Bigby, a primary care physician, has faced recent criticism over her responses to some controversial events occurring under her appointment. The state’s HHS department received backlash after a compounding pharmacy under its oversight was held responsible for a meningitis outbreak that resulted in 37 deaths across the country this year.
Mr. Polanowicz has led St. Elizabeth’s, the largest hospital within the Steward system, since April 2011. He was previously president and CEO of Marlborough (Mass.) Hospital. The date Mr. Polanowicz will assume his position was not provided in the report.
