NewYork-Presbyterian President and CEO Steven Corwin, MD, plans to step down Jan. 22 after a 14-year tenure, the system said in an Oct. 23 news release. Brian Donley, MD, executive vice president and COO, will succeed Dr. Corwin.

Under Dr. Corwin’s leadership, the New York City-based system expanded to 10 hospitals and nearly 200 primary and specialty care clinics and medical groups, with more than 40,000 employees and 10,000 affiliated physicians, according to the release.

A cardiologist and internist, Dr. Corwin took the helm of NewYork-Presbyterian in 2011 after serving as its executive vice president and COO since 2005.

Dr. Corwin is also credited in the release with strengthening the partnership between NewYork-Presbyterian and its two affiliated medical schools — Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medicine, both of New York City.

“Serving as president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian has been the privilege of my lifetime,” Dr. Corwin said in the release. “From my earliest days as a medical resident at Columbia to leading this extraordinary institution, I have been inspired by our mission to provide the very best care to every patient.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate to have the support of an exceptional board of trustees, a superb management team, and world-class physicians and healthcare professionals who have enabled our continued success. … Having worked closely with Brian over the last three years, I have complete confidence in him and look forward to his stewardship, knowing that NewYork-Presbyterian will continue to transform how health care is delivered, creating a healthier future for all.”

Dr. Donley, who began his career as an orthopedic surgeon, joined NewYork-Presbyterian from Cleveland Clinic, where he served as CEO of Cleveland Clinic London from 2018 to 2022. He also previously served as Cleveland Clinic’s chief of staff and chief of the clinical enterprise.

Additionally, he was a member of Cleveland Clinic’s global executive team and had served as president of the Cleveland Clinic regional hospitals and family health centers.

“It’s an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to lead this extraordinary institution, which is recognized around the world for its exceptional clinical care, pioneering research and commitment to educating the next generation of healthcare leaders,” Dr. Donley said in the release.
