Mark Smith, MD, has been named chief medical officer of East Lansing, Mich.-based MSU Health Care, effective Feb. 1.

Dr. Smith is an emergency medicine physician with more than 25 years of experience in healthcare. Most recently, he served as senior vice president and chief medical officer at Henry Ford Health Jackson (Mich.) Hospital, and CEO of Allegiance Medical Group. He is also a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University.

As CMO of MSU Health Care, Dr. Smith will have oversight of quality, safety, risk management, credentialing and operational alignment. He will be responsible for fostering collaboration across teams to advance patient care, the health system said in a Dec. 11 news release.

“His clinical and academic experience gives Dr. Smith a strong understanding of how care comes together across teams, hospitals and community partners,” Kris Allen, MSN, RN, chief administrative officer of MSU Health Care, said in the release. “That perspective will strengthen the way we serve patients in mid-Michigan and across the state.”
