Massena Memorial Hospital names David Bender CEO amid management takeover: 5 notes

Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital has named David Bender CEO amid an agreement that allows Potsdam, N.Y.-based St. Lawrence Health System to manage the hospital, according to CBS affiliate WWNY-TV.

Five notes:

1. The town of Massena, which owns the hospital, approved an agreement June 27 placing it under the management of St. Lawrence Health System, which also will offer operational strategy and guidance.

2. Massena Memorial lost $2 million in the first quarter of this year and ended robotic surgeries to improve its finances. It has applied for Critical Access Hospital designation.

3. Mr. Bender, who is an St. Lawrence Health System employee, previously led a turnaround at Gouverneur (N.Y.) Hospital.

4. He is a former senior strategy consultant with OptumInsight.

5. Mr. Bender replaces Charles Gijanto, ousted in March. Hospital CFO Patrick Facteau has been serving as temporary CEO.
