Leonard Hernandez resigns as CEO of Sumner Regional: 4 things to know

Leonard Hernandez, president and CEO of Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington, Kan., is leaving the organization for another job, according to a Wellington Daily News report.

Here are four things to know about Mr. Hernandez and his resignation.

1. Mr. Hernandez issued his resignation on Friday, effective Sept. 18.

2. After he leaves Sumner Regional, will take over the CEO position at Burlington, Kan.-based Coffey Health System, beginning Sept. 21.

3. In a written statement issued Friday, Mr. Hernandez thanked the Sumner Regional board for giving him the opportunity to lead the hospital for the last three years, according to the report. He added, "Small hospitals are struggling all across America, but if those of us who continue to believe there is a place for them continue to work for them, they can survive."

4. In light of the ongoing comprehensive assessment of Sumner Regional by consulting firm CHC, the hospital board will soon determine how to move forward as far as a search for Hernandez's replacement, according to the Wellington Daily News.
