IU Health Reorganization Leaves Hospital President Without Job

Jim Terwilliger, president of Indiana University Health's Methodist and University hospitals, both in Indianapolis, will step down from his position on March 1, due to a reorganization plan that initiated his departure, according to an Indiana Business Journal report.

Dennis Murphy, COO of the hospital system, created this leadership reorganization plan, according to the report.

"I have decided to reorganize a portion of the leadership within the academic health center," he wrote in an internal memo, according to the report. "Jim Terwilliger will be stepping down as the president for IU Health Methodist and University hospitals effective March 1, 2014, to pursue leadership opportunities outside of IU Health."

Mr. Terwilliger has served as president of the two hospitals since September 2012. Prior to that, he served as vice president of IU Health Cancer Services.

Jeff Sperring, MD, CEO of IU Health’s Riley Hospital for Children, will serve as interim CEO for the two hospitals until a permanent replacement is found, according to the report.

Note: Becker's Hospital Review contacted IU Health to inquire about the leadership reorganization. No response was received at time of publication.
