David Bernd. CEO Emeritus of Sentara Healthcare (Norfolk, Va.). Mr. Bernd retired from his role as CEO of Sentara Healthcare in March 2016, ending his 43-year career at the health system, 21 of which he spent at the helm. During his time as CEO, he transformed Sentara from a $600 million healthcare organization with four hospitals, one medical group and 143,000 health plan members in 1995, to a $4.7 billion integrated health system with 12 hospitals, four medical groups and more than 450,000 health plan members in 2016. Mr. Bernd is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and served as chairman of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association in 2012.
