Mary Jo Cagle, MD, will step down as president and CEO of Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health due to a serious family health matter.
Dr. Cagle’s last day at the organization will be May 31, according to a health system news release. Bernard “Bernie” Sherry, who has served as interim COO since December, was selected as interim CEO.
Cone Health said a search is underway for a new CEO, and the health system will appoint a new COO in the near future.
Dr. Cagle has served as president and CEO of Cone Health since 2021, when she succeeded Terry Akin.
She is the first woman and the first physician to serve as CEO at the health system, according to the release.
During her tenure, she played a key role in a number of accomplishments, including Cone Health becoming part of Washington, D.C.-based Risant Health, a nonprofit organization that is part of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente.
“It has been a joy and privilege to lead this system. I’m incredibly proud of all we’ve accomplished to increase access to care, enhance patient safety and care quality,” Dr. Cagle said in the release. “The future is bright as Cone Health leverages new approaches, capabilities and data to make proactive wellness care affordable and accessible for all.”
Prior to joining Cone Health, Mr. Sherry served as the CEO and ministry market executive for Ascension Wisconsin.
