Mr. Porter assumed the president and CEO role at Avera in 2000, which was then a newly formed health system. During his tenure, he helped grow the organization into a fully integrated care continuum and spearheaded numerous partnerships across the Upper Midwest.

Prior to joining Avera, Mr. Porter served as executive vice president for Fargo, N.D.-based Sisters of Mary of the Presentation Health System. He eventually became president and CEO of the health system.

The Avera System Members, which includes six sisters from the two religious orders that sponsor Avera, will engage a professional executive search firm to help develop a CEO selection process. The system members will also form a search committee, which will include Avera Health board of directors’ members, to identify a successor.
