UnitedHealth-owned prescription startup reports stolen laptop containing patient data

OptumRx, a prescription medicine delivery service offered through UnitedHealthcare plans, has reported the theft of a vendor employee’s laptop containing an unknown number of customer records.

“Working with the vendor, we determined that an electronic file on the stolen laptop included your name, address, health plan name, prescription drug information and prescribing provider information,” a notification letter from the company reads. “In some cases date of birth was also present. No financial information (Social Security number, credit card or financial account information) was involved.”

The laptop was stolen from a car on March 16 in Indianapolis. OptumRx is offering a year’s worth of free identity theft protection services for individuals who may have been affected by the breach.
