The company, whose official corporate name is Chongqing Graphene Tech Co., plans to launch 100,000 bendable smartphones in 2016. The phones have a retail price of 5,000 yuan — or $765 — each, and are meant to be worn on the wrist like a watch.
Currently, the smartphones’ screens only have black and white displays, though Moxi Group may look into color technology later. “Black and white phones are much easier to make. The color model power usage is also much higher than that of the black and white unit,” said Chongsheng Yu, executive vice president of Moxi.
The phones are based on graphene technology and will utilize e-ink, which is used in Amazon’s Kindles.
In spite of the e-ink, some are skeptical of how clear the smartphones’ screens will be. “If they’re using flexible e-ink then it’s a real loser. …[T]he colors are poor, the contrasts are poor and you can’t play videos on it,” said Roel Vertegaal, PhD, director of the Humana Media Lab at Kingston, Ontario, Canada-based Queen’s University, according to the report.
