The relationship between medical scribes and physicians

Along with providing documentation for physicians, the relationship between providers and medical scribes can turn into a mentorship.

Below, scribes and providers describe their relationship.

Question: What is your relationship like with scribes?

Holly Murray, internal medicine nurse practitioner: The relationship is wonderful, and I've enjoyed working with every scribe.

Glen Volyn, MD, family medicine physician: The relationship is good, and it has been a smooth process overall.

George Bell, MD, internal medicine physician: My relationship with the scribes is very good.  I enjoy working with them.

Wesley Carrion, MD, orthopedic surgeon: I feel the relationship is productive, professional and friendly. I treat my scribes as though they are my residents; constantly teaching and questioning them. They have learned to think beyond the scope of the note, and this helps mold them for their future careers.

Question: What is your relationship like with physicians?

Katie Hines: My relationship with physicians is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. You truly feel like a vital part of a healthcare team, and that trust from our staff and patients has helped me grow as a person.

Yomally Melendez: My relationship with physicians is professional during work hours and interpersonal after hours. Not only are they physicians, but they are mentors who take you under their wing as if you’re one of their own. They always want to see everyone succeed.
