Researchers analyzed a cohort of 144,625 health plan members who were all offered $20 to complete a patient activation measure and $40 to complete eight learning modules.
Just 16,041 plan members, or 11 percent, participated at all in the program. Of those, 7,099 plan members, or 44 percent, completed the first step, the patient activation, and received $20; 2,693 plan members completed the eight learning modules and received $40 and 6,249 plan members completed both steps and continued to use the program beyond what the incentives required.
Researchers concluded the monetary incentives were not enough to engage plan members with the online management program. However, because a significant percent of those who did begin the program stuck with it beyond the requirements to receive incentives, the researchers suggest these plan members found value in the program.
