The survey, sponsored by Vocera Communications, includes insights from 150 respondents, 33 percent of whom identified as clinical leaders and 67 percent of whom identified as IT leaders. For the survey, HIMSS Analytics asked respondents how they manage technological alerts — such as texts, pages, notifications and alarms — that interrupt clinicians’ workflows.
Here’s how clinical leaders responded when asked how often clinicians at their respective organizations have patient care activities interrupted by technological alerts.
1. Twenty-one times per hour or more: 4 percent
2. Eleven to 20 times per hour: 28 percent
3. Six to 10 times per hour: 32 percent
4. Two to five times per hour: 32 percent
5. Once per hour or less: 0 percent
6. Don’t know: 4 percent
