Stolen Laptop Held More Than 14k Minnesota Patients' Personal Information

A laptop containing information on more than 14,000 patients from Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services and North Memorial in Robbinsdale, Minn., has been stolen, according to an ABC Eyewitness News report.

The laptop was stolen from a locked car in a restaurant parking lot on July 25 and included nearly 14,000 Fairview patients' names, addresses and Social Security numbers. The laptop also held the names, medical record numbers and limited clinical information of approximately 2,800 patients at North Memorial.

An employee at Accretive Health, a healthcare services firm that works with both Fairview and North Memorial, owned the laptop. The laptop was password protected, but the data was not fully encrypted, violating a Fairview policy.

While Fairview and North Memorial said there is no evidence the data was accessed or misused, they are notifying affected patients and offering free identity theft protection and fraud-monitoring services.
