State of Kansas Fully Assumes HIE Regulatory Responsibilities

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has officially assumed regulatory responsibilities for the state's health information exchange, the Kansas Health Institute reported.

The new KDHE regulatory arm, Kansas Health Information Technology, will be responsible for overseeing the licensed private exchanges and ensuring patient opt-out requests are honored, according to the report. By the end of the year, more than 1 million patients and one-third of the state's hospitals will be connected through the HIE, according to the report.

The state took over from Kansas Health Information Exchange, an independent regulatory body formed by an executive order in 2010, according to the report.
