SHC Design estimates it could 3D print a prosthetic leg for $100, a wildly cheaper option than the traditional $4,200 prosthetic in Japan, according to the report. The company could open the door for many prosthetic wearers who want a specialized limb for swimming or skiing, or even certain shoes, like flip flops.
The company could also fill a need for wearers who cannot afford expensive prosthetics, according to the report.
SHC Design plans to start selling its 3D printer and prosthetic software next spring in the Philippines and Japan, according to the report. The entire package will cost an estimated $2,000, not including the cost of a scanner.
