Harvard Medical School in Boston launched Library of Evidence, a free, online resource for clinicians. The resource was created to help prevent unnecessary imaging tests by helping providers make an informed choice, based on available research evidence.
The library is a database of clinical knowledge, and it can be embedded into various clinical information systems at healthcare facilities. When a provider orders a test, the facility's software program can scan the Library of Evidence database and provide instant feedback on whether the ordered test is the most appropriate for a particular scenario.
"The overarching goals are to improve patient care and curb wasteful imaging by optimizing clinicians' ability to choose the most appropriate imaging," said David Osterbur, director of public and access Services at Harvard's Countway Library of Medicine and co-executive director of the Library of Evidence in a statement.
Ultimately, Harvard intends to expand the library to other services that require evidence-based support tools, such as laboratory testing.
