Processing error leads to unreported COVID-19 cases in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Health had to underreport COVID-19 cases because of a processing error in its electronic laboratory reporting system.

The ODH gets COVID-19 testing data from laboratories across Ohio through its electronic laboratory reports. On Jan. 24, ODH received five electronic lab reports that were formatted incorrectly.

The file contained invalid rows of data with valid lab results. Because of the invalid rows, a backup in ODH’s processing system caused a delay in reporting COVID-19-positive results.

Lab results were also postponed and affected the state’s COVID-19 positivity rate for Jan. 25.

The ODH said cases would be underreported until the electronic laboratory report processing backlog was cleared.
