ONC to Test Clinical Info Sharing Through NHIN Direct

The Office of the National Coordinator will begin testing clinical information exchanges between healthcare providers using NHIN Direct by late December or early January, according to a Government Healthcare IT report.

NHIN Direct is a set of tools and services that allows healthcare providers to share secured messages, including patient referrals and care summaries, in one-to-one "push" exchanges. This capability will help physicians and small practices conduct the kind of exchanges required in the first stage of meaningful use. Healthcare organizations are already planning to test them in seven pilots across the country.

So far, approximately 200 participants from 60 organizations, including IT firms, public and private organizations and state health departments, have collaborated online to help develop the NHIN Direct tools and services.
