ONC Panel Pushes for Greater Transparency in Providers' Measures for Health Data Security

A Health IT Policy Committee panel said stage 2 meaningful use should include a "spotlight" on the technical measures healthcare providers take to ensure security of health data, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The panel's proposal would not require eligible healthcare providers to do more than they are already required to do under the HIPAA security rule. "We're proposing to use meaningful use criteria to shine a spotlight on encryption of data at rest. We're not suggesting that documentation be presented but an attestation that this has been done," said Deven McGraw, chair of the privacy and security tiger team.

The proposal has emerged due to the number of recent data breaches that have occurred, despite incentives under the HITECH Act to encrypt data, according to the news report.
