ONC Issues Meaningful Use Call to Action for Critical Access, Rural Hospitals

HHS' ONC would like to see 1,000 critical access hospitals and small, rural hospitals meaningfully use certified electronic health record technology by the end of 2014, according to a Health IT Buzz report.

This call to action discusses the need for collaboration from many different parties and players in the healthcare industry. "To realize this goal, we need all hands on deck. We need everyone rowing in sync, including leadership and staff in every critical access hospital, EHR vendors, hospital associations and staff offices of rural health in every state, Rural Health IT Network Development grantees, ONC grantees and many more public and private, federal and local partners," Mat Kendal, director of the office of provider adoption support for the ONC, and Leila Samy, rural health IT coordinator, wrote in the call to action.

According to the report, ONC is committed to providing $30 million for regional extension centers to meet the goal. The funds are for RECs to help as many as 1,501 of critical access and small, rural hospitals achieve meaningful use.
