OCR launches HIPAA website to guide app developers

A new website launched by HHS’ Office for Civil Rights outlines HIPAA considerations and answers questions related to the privacy law for app developers. Not only does the website help inform developers, but OCR is also using it as a platform to better understand what additional guidance to provide developers.

“Many mHealth developers are not familiar with the HIPAA rules and how the rules would apply to their products. Use this site to help OCR understand what guidance on HIPAA regulations would be helpful to you,” reads the website.

Users can submit questions, offer comments on other users’ questions and vote on the relevancy of submitted topics.

The site already has a handful of submitted questions, such as asking how to determine if a company is a covered entity, what part(s) of a solution need to be compliant with HIPAA and requests for more guidance around patient-generated health data.
