NIST finalizes 'NICE Framework' for cybersecurity workforce development

The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology released its National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education Cybersecurity Workforce Framework, also known as the NICE Framework, earlier this month.

NIST's National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, or NICE, is a collaboration between various entities within the academic, government and private sectors to promote cybersecurity education, training and workforce development. Its goal is to "increase the number of skilled cybersecurity professionals helping to keep our nation secure."

The NICE Framework serves as a reference tool for employers, educators and technology providers — along with current cybersecurity workers — looking to support cybersecurity workforce development. The framework provides a common glossary of terms to categorize and describe cybersecurity work and details regarding how to identify, recruit, develop and retain cybersecurity talent.

"The NICE Framework is a reference starting point for the content of guidance and guidelines on career paths, education, training and credentialing programs," the framework reads. "The NICE Framework is a resource that will strengthen an organization's ability to communicate consistently and clearly about cybersecurity work and its cybersecurity workforce."
