For the competition, NIAAA challenges the biotechnology community design a new wearable device that can measure a participant’s blood alcohol concentration in real time; for example, in blood or intestinal fluid that surrounds the body’s cells. At present, BAC is measured using technology that detects alcohol released through sweat or vapor.
The ultimate goal is to develop a prototype for researchers to collect more accurate data, which can support understanding and treatment of alcohol use disorder in the future. As the technology progresses, these devices could also be rolled out to consumers interested in tracking their personal drinking patterns.
The first place prize for this competition is $200,000. The second place prize is $100,000.
