Nearly 40% of Physicians Unconvinced Health IT Will Improve Patient Outcomes

Roughly 40 percent of a group of surveyed physicians are not convinced electronic medical records and health information exchanges will yield many benefits for patients, according to an Accenture report.

The report, part of a study on connected health, details responses from Accenture's survey of more than 3,700 physicians in eight countries. Many physicians either did not know or said there would be zero or a negative impact of EMRs and HIEs on specific healthcare problems. Key findings from the survey include the following:

•    44 percent of physicians are not convinced health IT will help reduce the number of unnecessary interventions and procedures.
•    43 percent of physicians are not convinced HIT systems will cause increased speed of access to health services.
•    Nearly 40 percent of physicians are not convinced HIT will lead to improved outcomes for patients.

The report suggests a need for greater outreach to physicians to make a business case for HIT and demonstrate its potential benefits.
