More Than 6,000 May Be Affected in BCBS Data Breach

The patient data was compromised between Nov. 1, 2011 and Oct. 1, 2012, and initially the HHS’ Breach Notification Tool tallied the number of patients affected at just more than 4,800.

According to a PHIPrivacy.net report, Connextions, a technology and solutions provider of call-center services that Blue Cross Blue Shield uses, is the source of the data breach. A spokeswoman for Wellpoint, Anthem’s parent company, said that an employee of Connextions confessed to the Social Security Administration that she took Social Security numbers from Blue Cross Blue Shield information on the server.
