Azure Stack is an extension of Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform. Through Azure Stack, organizations can build and deploy hybrid applications that run on the Azure public cloud and in the organization’s own on-premise data center.

The product’s goal is to help organizations meet their “business and technical requirements with the right combination of cloud and on-premises deployments,” according to the Microsoft website.

The commercial Azure Stack release comes as Microsoft indicated plans to cut thousands of positions in an effort to shift its sales focus to cloud services rather than the company’s traditional server and desktop products. The company reportedly began notifying affected employees their jobs were eliminated or under consideration to be cut July 6.
