Health systems are expanding partnerships with Big Tech companies as they race to deploy AI, modernize infrastructure and improve cybersecurity.
Here are five collaborations involving Amazon, Microsoft and Google reported on in the past month:
1. Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Health and Providence, R.I.-based Brown University Health have expanded their use of Microsoft’s agentic AI platform. Brown University Health built more than two dozen AI agents with Microsoft Copilot Studio, including two emergency department agents embedded in Dragon Copilot, while Franciscan Health said its earlier Azure migration now lets it bring its disaster-recovery environment online in under an hour, down from 8 to 12 hours previously, cutting infrastructure costs 33%, Microsoft said Aug. 11.
2. Coral Gables, Fla.-based Baptist Health South Florida’s partnership with Amazon One Medical took effect Aug. 1, connecting the health system’s specialty network with One Medical’s primary care patients across South Florida as the newest addition to the retailer’s roughly 20-region collaborator network.
3. Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare helped build a new Apple device security baseline for hospitals, mapping Apple platform controls to HHS’ Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices guidance. Elias Kikano, MD, Emory’s medical director for health informatics, discussed the project on a healthsystemCIO Show podcast July 30.
4. Pittsburgh-based UPMC bought more than 60,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot seats, placing it alongside Wells Fargo and Wipro among enterprise customers purchasing at that scale, Microsoft executives said on a July 29 fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call.
5. Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham has rolled out Microsoft’s Dragon Copilot to more than 4,000 providers, with a study finding the tool cut clinician burnout 21%, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the same July 29 call.
