Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Health and Providence, R.I.-based Brown University Health have expanded their use of Microsoft’s agentic AI platform.
Brown University Health built more than two dozen AI agents using Microsoft Copilot Studio, including two emergency department agents embedded in Microsoft Dragon Copilot that answer hospital policy questions and surface on-call schedules, according to an Aug. 11 Microsoft blog post. The academic health system also rolled out Microsoft 365 Copilot organization-wide and used an AI research agent to help draft a responsible-AI governance policy, cutting the expected development timeline from a year to four months.
“It’s going to bring back the joy to the practice of medicine,” said Adam Landman, MD, senior vice president and chief digital information officer at Brown University Health, in the post.
Franciscan Health, which migrated its Epic EHR to Microsoft Azure, said the infrastructure now underpins its agentic AI efforts. The health system can bring its disaster-recovery environment online in under an hour, down from 8 to 12 hours previously, and has cut infrastructure costs by 33% while improving application response times by 50%.
“Since we migrated to Azure, we can do a failover and be up in 30 minutes,” said Franciscan Health CIO Charles Wagner said in the article. “This is something we would never be able to do in our previous environment.”
Both health systems are using Microsoft Fabric, Dragon Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Azure as a connected foundation for scaling AI agents across clinical and operational workflows.
