Identity Theft Resource Center, IDT911 see 397% increase in data breaches since 2005

In 2005, Identity Theft Resource Center, based in San Diego, and IDT911, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., began monitoring the number of data breaches in the United States.

The two organizations monitor data breaches across healthcare, business, government, education and financial services. Since 2005, the ITRC and IDT911 have noted a 397 percent increase in data breaches. This year alone, more than 6.2 million records have been compromised.

From 2005 to 2016, 27.9 percent of data breaches occurred in the healthcare sector, accounting for 176.5 million exposed records.

More than 1.5 million patient records have been physically stolen since 2014. Hacking has been responsible for compromising 131 million records since 2007. Employee error and insider theft have caused 371 breaches.
