How IT systems affect health systems financially

In an increasingly digitized healthcare landscape, the symbiotic relationship between information technology systems and financial stability within health systems has become more pronounced as the integration of IT systems has not only revolutionized patient care but also raised critical questions about cost, efficiency and long-term sustainability.

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare recently reported that its ability to use its EHR could affect its future earnings.

The health system said "our ongoing ability to demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health record technology and the impact of interoperability requirements," could determine future financial results.

HCA hasn't been the only health system to report that one of its IT systems could affect bottom lines. Heywood Healthcare, based in Gardner, Mass., cited a "lengthy electronic medical record transition" as a factor in its decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
