How data-mining cut ED visits by Wyoming Medicaid patients by 20%

Since October 2012, a partnership between Wyoming and Xerox has used data analytics to identify frequent emergency department users among the state’s Medicaid population, allowing for targeted interventions that have led to a 20 percent reduction in ED visits by Medicaid beneficiaries.

Using data in Wyoming’s Medicaid Management Information System, Xerox identified patients who had visited an ED more than 10 times in a year or who had missed follow-up appointments after a hospitalization. Using this information, clinicians were able to reach out to these patients and assist them in finding appropriate avenues for care.

“Our priority is to help people make informed decisions about their healthcare, like how to best manage chronic conditions and where to seek treatment when necessary,” said Dr. James F. Bush, medical director of the Wyoming Department of Health. “Xerox’s care management program enables us to support our patients in this way, and it reduces unnecessary and costly ED visits.”
