Hospitals Developing Patient Portals for Better Access to Personal Health Information

Hospitals are developing or expanding patient portals to give patients better access to their personal medical records, according to several news reports.

The University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center recently launched a patient portal that gives patients one-click access to their health information, including lab results and medication lists. The patient portal will also eventually allow patients to communicate directly with their healthcare provider and set up office visits. Hospital officials plan to expand the patient portal to all outpatient practices starting next spring, according to a Democrat and Chronicle news report.

Spectrum Health, based in Grand Rapid, Mich., has already implemented a patient portal but has recently enhanced it to make it more robust, according to a Health Data Management news report. The health system has added four new features that will allow patients to set up a family account, access benefits and eligibility information from a regional health plan, view pediatric growth charts and view immunization records.
