HHS is requesting public comment about what kinds of non-federal data sets, such as surveys conducted by state government or private companies, it should promote. HHS hopes the initiative will encourage the development of applications, Web-based tools and dashboards that would help individuals, organizations and the government understand healthcare issues.

It has already posted some data sets that are available to the public, such as community health data as well as Medicare spending and volumes listed by state and procedure.
