Here are four things to know about the government’s use of digital technology.
1. Survey respondents reported the following digital trends will have the greatest effect on their agencies’ goals over the next few years:
• Mobile devices: 45 percent
• Data analytics and predictive analytics: 39 percent
• Cloud computing: 39 percent
• Enhanced focus on privacy and security: 30 percent
2. Though government leaders are eager to adopt digital technology, that goal is not without obstacles. Top barriers to digital technology adoption include:
• Insufficient budget: 62 percent
• Security and privacy concerns: 53 percent
• Slow acquisition procedures: 40 percent
• More pressing priorities: 33 percent
• Lack of employees with digital skills: 32 percent
3. In 2014, 60 percent of government leaders reported their workers were not adequately trained on newly implemented digital technology. In 2015, that number dropped slightly to 56 percent of government leaders.
4. Survey respondents reported the following actions their agencies have taken to better engage their stakeholders and achieve goals:
• Automated existing business processes using digital technology: 39 percent
• Developed new policies and initiatives: 33 percent
• Initiated relevant pilot programs: 24 percent
• Adopted new technology and processes: 24 percent
• No new initiatives: 22 percent
• Implemented new and more efficient business processes: 19 percent
• Developed new training programs: 19 percent
• Reprogrammed budget to digital projects: 8 percent
• Enhanced focus on customer experience: 6 percent
• Completely reimagined business processes: 3 percent
