Epic’s creatively designed campus is a draw for future and current staffers, according to founder and CEO Judy Faulkner.
A major reason? Individual offices for employees.
“The most expensive feature of the campus is not the themes — it’s that our staff have their own offices,” Ms. Faulkner wrote in an April 7 blog post. “This pays back in spades in productivity.”
The EHR vendor is currently constructing several new buildings so its growing number of employees can have their own offices (about 10-20% choose to be doubled-up). Still, Ms. Faulkner said the cost of Epic’s office buildings falls on the “low end of the range.”
Epic designs its buildings down to the bathrooms. In its New York City-themed building, Fomalhaut, the toilet in a single-person bathroom is made to appear like the back seat of a taxicab with a picture of the backs of the front seat and cab driver’s head on the wall in front of it.
“I’ve often wondered how people can be put into stark, boring physical environments and be expected to build creative, beautiful products,” Ms. Faulkner wrote. “The campus helps our software builders feel that they are in a creative place where they can design software that is highly functional and, as much as possible, delightful. It’s a challenging job.”
