Nuance announced Aug. 20 that its virtual assistant is now integrated with Epic’s ambient voice technology “Hey Epic!” in the EHR’s front-end software Hyperspace.

Nuance’s virtual assistant builds upon its conversational, artificial intelligence solution Dragon Medical, which first became available in the Epic EHR in 2018 through the software’s Haiku and Rover mobile apps. The virtual assistant allows clinicians to send voice commands to retrieve information from the EHR such as patient records, lab results, schedules and visit summaries.

By expanding the voice assistant for Hey Epic! to the EHR’s front-end user interface, clinicians can use voice commands directly in the EHR from their computer rather than mobile app.

Patrick Guffey, MD, chief medical information officer at Children’s Hospital Colorado, in the news release said that the virtual assistant tech with Hey Epic! in the company’s mobile app has allowed him to more quickly navigate the EHR and saves time for interacting with patients rather than searching through documentation. “

“Now, having access to this technology in Hyperspace will further our ability to gain situational awareness and access to accurate, timely information that helps us treat the patient to the best of our ability in the moment,” he added.
