EHR Data Not ‘Complete’ Enough for Clinical Trial Patient Recruitment

Electronic health data has the potential to be reused to identify which patients may be eligible for participation in clinical trials, but a study has found overall completeness of the data for recruitment purposes was less than optimal, according to a study published in the BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making.

Researchers studied EHR data from five German university hospitals and 15 clinical trials. The eligibility criteria sentences were broken up into independent patient characteristics and then matched to data elements in the EHRs.

The study found that only 35 percent of the EHR data had data elements that were complete that could be used for clinical trial recruitment.

According to the study, there still exists a significant gap in the structure and content between the data gathered during patient care and data required for eligibility, making secondary use of EHR data for recruitment challenging.
