Diverse tech teams helped boost innovation, CIOs say

Through relaxing rigid qualification requirements and emphasizing hiring more people from underrepresented groups, tech teams were able to be more agile throughout the pandemic, The Wall Street Journal reported Feb. 22.

Target, for instance, decided to eliminate the usual four-year degree qualification requirement to open itself up to more diverse candidates.

“You don’t need a degree from Stanford anymore to do this job,” Mike McNamara, executive vice president and CIO of Target, said of some IT positions.

When developing new technology plans throughout the pandemic, the personal experiences of both the tech team and customer teams enabled Target to drive these initiatives. 

“That’s where diversity comes in,” Mr. McNamara said.
