Data integrity poses a major challenge to ROI: 3 things to know

Data analytics have the potential to not simply monitor clinical operations, but actually transform those operations and healthcare delivery as a whole — so long as the integrity of the core data can be ensured.

In a session titled "The Return on Investment in Data Analytics and Health IT" at the Becker's Hospital Review Health IT + Revenue Cycle conference in Chicago in October, healthcare leaders discussed the challenges preventing hospitals and health systems from seeing returns on their investments in data analytics.

Panelists included Robin Sarkar, PhD, CIO of St. Joseph, Mich.-based Spectrum Health Lakeland; Albert Villarin, MD, chief clinical consultant at DrFirst; Jeffrey Daigrepont, senior vice president of healthcare IT services for Coker Group; and Geoffrey Brown, vice president and CIO of Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

Here are three takeaways from their discussion:

1. Data integrity is of the utmost importance when utilizing data analytics; it is also the single biggest obstacle to ROI.

2. ROI also suffers when new systems are purchased and installed, but never fully implemented or adopted on a comprehensive scale.

3. Data analytics can highlight inefficiencies in care delivery; transformation will happen when clinicians are equipped with those findings and the support they need to change traditional models of delivery.
