CPOE Adoption at 21.7% in 2010

The percent of hospitals that have adopted computerized physician order entry has increased from 15.7 percent in 2009 to 21.7 percent in 2010, according to research firm KLAS.

Before the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an average of 87 hospitals per year adopted CPOE; after ARRA, that average jumped to 233 hospitals per year.

KLAS' report, "CPOE 2011: The ARRA Effect," also shows how CPOE adoption varied by vendor.  Of all the vendors in the study, Cerner's Millennium PowerChart has the most hospitals live with CPOE, followed by Epic's EpicCare Inpatient. Both companies have approximately doubled their number of live CPOE sites since 2009.
