CMS: $8.35B in Meaningful Use Payments to Date; Hospital Registration Up 60%

CMS has paid more than $8.35 billion through the meaningful use program to date and 400 hospitals registered for incentive payments through the program in October, according to a Bloomberg BNA report.

CMS estimated it made $645 million in meaningful use payments in October alone. Total payments for the program, now in its second year, reached $7 billion in September.

CMS reported this information during a Health Information Technology Policy Committee hearing Nov. 7.

Fewer than 250 hospitals registered for incentive payments through the program in September. According to Rob Anthony, a specialist in CMS' Office of eHealth Standards and Services, the 60 percent surge in hospital registrations in October is most likely a response to the end of the federal fiscal year Sept. 30, since many hospitals set that date as a target for qualifying for meaningful use payments.

According to Mr. Anthony, more than 60 percent of all hospitals that are eligible for Medicare or Medicaid meaningful use incentive payments have received one.
