CIOs adopt tools to track employee engagement, productivity: 3 notes

Chief information officers at various organizations are taking more control of their department's productivity by installing tools that better track where employees are spending their time, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Three notes:

1. Rather than relying on meetings and employees tracking their time, different software applications can evaluate a company's internal infrastructure, giving CIOs more real-time data.

2. Genealogy website Ancestry is using software that pulls metrics on how many times a team contributes code and how many flaws are being fixed. This gives the company a better view on how efficiently teams are performing as well as on the individual level.

3. There are also tools that have allowed CIOs to pinpoint what in-house software can be eliminated in order to cut costs and maintain operational efficiency, WSJ reports. One company was able to reduce its internal software applications to 260 from 800 by evaluating what apps were either redundant or not used.
