Chief data officers and chief analytics officers are not staples of every executive board room, but as business becomes increasingly digital, they are becoming more influential in their organizations.

Many executives want to move their businesses forward in new decision-making processes through analytics but are unsure of how to accomplish that on their own, so they rely on the CAO to develop a strategy. The roles are just developing — many companies do not even have a job description developed for them — so many businesses are still trying to flesh out where the CAO and CDO fit in the organizational structure, according to TechTarget.

Although only 25 percent of large businesses will have hired a CDO by the end of 2015, according to a study by consultant agency Gartner, data-centric roles are becoming more important to businesses, and the trend will likely continue upward, according to the TechTarget report.

Part of proving the value of these leaders is bringing expertise to the field, and managing expectations for analytics and data use in business is an important factor, according to the report. CDOs and CIOs must also work out where the boundaries of their roles are rather than overlapping, according to the report.
