Cerner issues another round of layoffs & 10 other health IT notes

Here's the latest roundup of stories about health IT companies, including Apple, Cerner and Google.

1. In partnership with Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine, Apple published Nov. 13 a new study indicating its Apple Watch can safely detect heart irregularities.

2. Epic has added several third-party developed applications to its online marketplace over the past few months.

3. Following an initial rollout in select states, Best Buy announced Nov. 13 that Tyto Care's portable patient examination device for virtual appointments will be sold at stores nationwide.

4. EHR vendor eClinicalWorks is partnering with health insurer Humana, Trusted Health Plan and GuideWell to support bidirectional interoperability between providers and payers.

5. The Office of Civil Rights of HHS is asking for more information about Google's "Project Nightingale" with St. Louis-based Ascension, according to a Nov. 12 Wall Street Journal report.

6. Cerner will lay off 131 U.S.-based employees as part of its effort to increase operating margins to 20 percent by the end of 2019.

7. Austin, Texas-based Intiva Health announced Nov. 12 that it has finalized its blockchain-powered credentialing and career management solution.

8. Employees at St. Louis-based Ascension have raised concerns about the ways Google is collecting and analyzing the personal health information of millions of the health system's patients.

9. Amazon released its virtual care app Amazon Care back in September to give Seattle-based employees access to convenient care. Since its launch, Amazon has branded the app as a "first stop for healthcare," with employees using the app to receive services for minor colds, infections and more.

10. During the third quarter earnings call, Apple executives discussed the company's financial performance and outlined expectations for its healthcare offerings in the future.

11. Livongo Health reported third quarter revenue at $46.7 million, a 148 percent increase year over year.
