Apple unveils new stores — with a major makeover

Apple is rolling out a new type of retail stores that look sleeker than ever, according to The New York Times.

On May 19, the 15th anniversary of the first Apple retail store opening, the tech giant revealed its stores' new Genius Grove design, which will replace the traditional Genius Bars.

The first revamped store is in San Francisco and is set to open to the public on May 21.

The Genius Groves will contain a plethora of unique characteristics, including wider aisles and an enormous video wall, according to the Times and USA Today. Apple workers can present and instruct classes in an open area aptly called the Forum. Perhaps most eccentric of all are the ficus trees — and the benches around them — that fill the store, providing scenery for customers.

Senior Director of Design and Development B.J. Siegel added that the retail stores will utilize solar panels for electricity and new air conditioning techniques.

Outside the Apple store in San Francisco is a small courtyard containing trees, a fountain, seating and free Wi-Fi. It's open to the public 24/7.

"We didn't want it to feel like a store. We wanted it to feel like a town square — very open, and everyone invited," said Angela Ahrendts, Apple's senior vice president of retail and online stores, according to the report. "We want people to say, 'Meet me at Apple.'"

Apple currently has 477 retail stores.
